What is Marketplace or Workplace Ministry?
No single term is perfect for encapsulating ministry and mission in the workplace so we will use the terms workplace and marketplace ministry interchangeably. Some prefer ‘world of work’. Neil Johnson defines the marketplace as ‘the forum through which human economic commerce is conducted’. It includes the business community, the workplace of whatever kind and ‘policy-making forums’ at local, national and international levels that impact the economy and those working within it. He describes the marketplace as ‘perhaps the only institution that touches, directly or indirectly, virtually every person on planet Earth. In one way or another, it is a pervasive part of every society, culture and people group. It is found in the midst of every religion and every political system in every historic era’.
The Call to Belong to Christ and Participate in His Redemptive work naturally brought us together. This is a call to restore relationship with God and with other people and with the world around us. It encompasses all of a person’s being and doing. As Marketplace Ministers of today, Marketplace Ministry must be renewed. In order for transformation to take place, change has to come to the marketplace, and marketplace Christians must play a key role.
If we think of worship as something we do on Sunday and work as something we do on Monday, this is not what God designed nor what he desires for our lives. The Hebrew word avodah jointly means work, worship, and service. The word for working in the fields is the same word used for worshipping the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
What is the mandate of a Marketplace Minister?
Jesus insisted that love would be the defining mark of the Christian faith in our work and worship places; not pious, rhetoric, not words of caustic condemnation, not demeaning insults, and not judgmental attitudes. It’s about love. We are to love God and our neighbors, that’s our next level mandate. Our next level attitudes. And wherever you find yourself today is your marketplace, you are to love and care for those around you, thus making Jesus known in their lives.
Mark 16:15 The primary purpose of being on earth is to fulfill this divine mandate. And the mandate the Lord Jesus Christ left for His followers is to preach the gospel to all nations. (Mark 16:15).
The book of Genesis clearly tells us that after God has made man, He told him to take full control of all other things created. In other words, He wants us to subdue the world, to bring the other creatures and elements under our direct control. This is God’s mandate for us.
In the scripture, Jesus mandate is Jesus: ‘All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
